USCG Letter of Designation as Uninspected Oceanographic Research Vessel valid through December 2025
History
The keel was laid February 16 1973 at Lindwall Boat Works Santa Barbara California
Designed by Shannon Eleuterius with stability calculations by Clyde Leavitt Naval Engineer
The vessel was built as a USCG inspected passenger vessel for recreational diving operations in the Channel Islands Southern California certified for 49 passengers
Launched August 15 1974 and operated commercially through the early 1980s
Subsequently operated as a dive charter vessel in Florida before being acquired by the Florida Marine Research Institute Florida Department of Natural Resources
Renamed and utilized for research operations in the Gulf of Mexico through 1997
In 1992 a 13.5 ft mid hull extension was completed at LaForce Shipyard Bayou La Batre Alabama based on design by Mark Pudloe Marine Architect
The vessel was acquired by Humboldt State University in 1998 for continued research service
Major upgrades completed in 2006 include replacement of main engines Tier II reduction gears shafts propellers exhaust system and engine controls
Stability recalculations were completed following hull reconfiguration including bulbous bow addition and bow thruster installation
Further upgrades in 2008 include installation of a new Northern Lights 55 kW Tier II generator and updated bridge electronics
In 2009 NSF funded upgrades supported installation of advanced oceanographic systems including CUFES system Sea Bird 25 CTD hull mounted ADCP real time oceanographic winch with 5000 ft conductive cable trawl equipment lab systems AIS and onboard monitoring systems
